Historic Days Out in 2014 with English Heritage.....

Investment at top English Heritage properties - including elegant Kenwood in North London, aristocratic Audley End House & Gardens at Saffron Walden in Essex, majestic Kenilworth Castle & Elizabethan Garden in Warwickshire and opulent Osborne on the Isle of Wight - will guarantee even more historic interest for days out during 2014.
Better Than Ever - Kenwood Re-Opens Kenwood House, Robert Adanis 18th century masterpiece in north London, re-opens at the start of December 2013 after extensive repair and restoration work.Home to one of the greatest art collections in Britain, part of the restoration work now nearing completion will re-display its glorious paintings and show them at their best. With a new roof, refreshed exteriors and its wonderful Adam rooms restored, the overall atmosphere will also be transformed to feel less like a house and more like a home. There will be new introductory displays to enjoy, which tell the story of the house and its residents - from Judge Lord Mansfield and his mixed race great niece Dido Belle to brewing magnate Edward Guinness, who gave Kenwood to the nation. Visitors can also visit the restored ornamental dairy, where 18th century ladies once took tea and played at being dairymaids.
As well as famous paintings by masters including Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner, Reynolds and Gainsborough to admire, full length portraits of extravagantlydressed Jacobean courtiers located on the upper floor, will be able to be seen by all, thanks to the installation of a lift. Set in 112-acres of leafy parkland landscaped by Humphrey Repton and dotted with garden ornaments and sculptures -including famous works by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth - Kenwood has wonderful views across London. Entry will continue to be free, but tailored guided tours for groups can be pre-booked - and for just a small charge, will be better value than ever.
Kenwood, Hampstead Lane, London NW3 7JR

Royal childhood at Osborne

At Osborne, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's holiday hideaway, Swiss Cottage and Museum - used as a giant 'play house by their nine children - will re-open following restoration of the buildings and conservation of the collections. The charming buildings will tell the story of childhood at Osborne, with a new exhibition and hands-on activities exploring the lives and characters of all the royal princes and princesses, alongside over 4,000 original artefacts in the cottage and museum which have been carefully conserved after being on almost continuous display for nearly a century. The Swiss Cottage Quarter is conveniently located roughly halfway between Osborne House and Queen Victories private beach. Osborne, East Cowes, Isle of Wight, P032 6JX

Victorian childhood at Audley End House & Gardens The story of eight children who grew up in the 1830s and 40s at Audley End is to be told as part of the opening of the second floor Nursery Suite in the Jacobean mansion, for the first time.Life in the nursery for them and their succession of wet nurses, nursery maids and governesses - at a time when aristocratic children were rarely seen or heard by their parents - is being unveiled as part of a £1m project. The series of rooms in which they spent so much of their young lives - eating a wholesome diet of 'nursery food,' reading and playing with toys - can be explored helped by interactive displays.Along with the Nursery Suite, another previously unseen part of the house will also open next year, when the Coal Gallery reveals its importance for heating the house, and providing it with hot water. There's more to see in other parts of the house too - with improved presentation in the State Rooms and a virtual tour of the house to enjoy.

Latest News from Visit Flanders.....

It is now less than a year until the beginning of the centenary of the Great War. Throughout Belgium, and in particularly, in Flanders Fields, the Westhoek region of Flanders, between August 1914 and November 1918, the peaceful landscape of homes and fields was transformed into a battlefield panorama. The war devastated entire cities, towns and villages, and destroyed them beyond recognition. And a million soldiers, men from right around the globe, were wounded, missing or killed, whilst thousands of citizens were made homeless and left as refugees. The surviving landscape tells the story of the war. Over the past 90 or so years, it has drawn thousands of visitors, and as we approach the centenary of this period that has shaped the world we live in today, we know this number will swell dramatically. From people paying tributes to family members killed in war, to school children learning about the dire consequences of conflict, there are many reasons why people of all ages and backgrounds come to visit. In recognition of this, considerable investment has been made into the visitor experience.
Many of the math visitor sites have undergone major renovation. In Ypres, the In Flanders Fields Museum, housed in the magnificent Cloth Hall (itself, rebuilt after the end of the First World War) reopened in July of last year with an expansion of 50% and utilisation of state-of-theart technology, including the presentation of personal stories to visitors, based upon data they've entered into a micro-chip embedded in a bracelet This July saw the opening of new sections of the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 in Zonnebeke, with a new building dedicated to the Battle of Passechdaele and an expanded reconstruction of German and Allied trenches. These are just a couple of highlights - I could also mention a new visitor cemetery next to the Military Cemetery at Lijssenthoek , the restoration of the gardens at Talbot House, the famous soldiers' club in Poperinge or the renovated Yser Tower Museum in Diksmuide. And there's work still being undertaken, including the development of a brand new visitor centre next to the Ganzenpoot lock complex in Nieuwpoort, expected to open in October next year. There's also been significant investment made into the accessibility of the product - not just the visitor sites and museums, but into restaurants, accommodation public toilets...all the parts of a visitor's experience. Visit Flanders has put together a comprehensive guide, providing detailed information to the Flanders Fields region for visitors with disabilities. This commitment to tourism for all' was recognised recently at World Travel Market London, where Visit Flanders picked up the 'accessible tourism award' at the Amadeus / World Travel Market Awards.

In addition to the major sites within the Flanders Fields region, there's a huge programme of special events taking place right across Flanders. There are far too many to mention all of them - but these include 'The Light Front' - a human chain of fire along the valley of the Lys River, to the construction of a pontoon bridge across the River Scheldt in Antwerp, which will be the platform for an event packed with music and dance performances, and visitors will have a once-in-alifetime opportunity to cross this unique bridge.Of course, one of Flanders' greatest assets is its warmth of welcome, and this is embedded firmly within tourism assets. Whether its hotels that know about those little things that can really make a stay for British visitors, to restaurants that not only welcome groups with open arms, but serve them truly magnificent food and drink, the people of Flanders work hard to deliver world-class hospitality. There's much more information about the commemoration of the Great War Centenary at www. flandersfields1418.com, or contact our Trade department in London. We're looking forward to strengthening our work with the groups market and facing the busy years ahead together.

Talyllyn Railway, the perfect Welsh day out.....

The Talyllyn Railway is the ideal Welsh day out. Our friendly staff and volunteers will welcome groups to the spectacular and beautiful scenery where the southern slopes of Snowdonia meet the sea on the Mid Wales coast of Cardigan Bay. Your narrow gauge steam train dates back to the 1860s and will transport you in comfort from Tywyn inland nearly 8 miles. In need of refreshment or a souvenir? We have well stocked licensed cafés and shops at Tywyn and Abergynolwyn. There are facilities for wheelchairs on almost all our trains, and there are accessible toilets. The Talyllyn railway was the first railway in the world to be preserved in 1951. Ever since it has been run mainly by volunteers, whose enthusiasm is infectious. They will always find time to chat, even perhaps to show our visitors the workings of the immaculate steam engine at the head of the train.

Want to have a look at our signal box? Just ask! There is a fantastic Narrow Gauge Railway Museum at Tywyn, where the story of the little railways throughout the UK can be enjoyed. There is free coach parking and free driver hospitality too. We also offer free group reservations on our trains. Follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

Take a trip on The West Somerset Railway......

England’s longest “heritage” railway is the West Somerset which runs for 20 miles between Bishops Lydeard (four miles from Taunton and 6 from Junction 25 on the M5) and Minehead. For half the journey trains pass through the Quantock Hills, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and then between Exmoor and the Bristol Channel coast. There are 10 stations along the route offering a variety of destinations to combine with the train journey including the ancient harbour town of Watchet, Cleeve Abbey and Torre Cider Farm at Washford, medieval Dunster with its Castle and of course the seaside at Minehead. For those staying in Minehead, West Somerset or Greater Exmoor the trip to Bishops Lydeard can be followed by Taunton itself or the splendidly restored formal gardens at Hestercombe House.

The WSR carries some 200,000 passengers per year and Group Travel is an important part of its business. The Railway’s Commercial Department has been attending Excursions for a number of years and has found it an invaluable meeting place for contacts both new and established. The Railway also seeks to promote short break and other stays in the area around it and carries appropriate information to that end. Train services operate on selected dates during most of the year, on 5 days a week during April, May and October, and daily from mid-May to the start of October. There are regular special events held throughout the year for both the railway enthusiast and the wider public. The latter goes from children’s “”Meet and Greets” with popular characters to the Annual Real Ale Festival.

The official Company website can be viewed at www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk and carries general information about the Railway, including Group Travel arrangements, plus regularly updated news about events. For those who prefer the general telephone number of the Railway is 01643 704996 whilst the Tours Office is open Mondays to Fridays via 01643 700384.

Steve Reed Tourism visits Southport....

Article by: Matthew Inglis (Advertisement Manager, Coach Tours UK)

Steve Reed Tourism recently held their latest familiarisation trip, alongside Southport Tourism (TEL: 01704 395510), with a three day visit to the seaside resort of Southport, a superb coach friendly destination with plenty to offer, and ideally situated for your group to take in other major attractions in nearby Liverpool and Preston.

The Group stayed over the course of the weekend at the Ramada Plaza Hotel Southport (TEL 01704 516220) a 4 star Hotel, offering 133 luxury bedrooms, with some providing beautiful views across the Marine Lake. Steve Reed had again put on a superb three day visit to the area to showcase what Southport can offer groups. The trip started on Saturday 17th August, with around 25 people arriving at the Hotel before having the opportunity to visit Genting Casino in the afternoon, and the chance to win big and start the weekend off on a high!

Following on from the afternoon, the group visited The Best Western Royal Clifton Hotel (TEL 01704 533771) for an evening meal. The Royal Clifton Hotel is ideally situated if taking your group to Southport. Based on the Promenade, the Hotel is a stone’s throw away from Lord Street, the main shopping area of Southport, which itself is steeped in history. The Hotel has superb accommodation options and can suit almost any requirements.

Sunday was a busy day for the Group as they headed off for a look around the Britannia Prince of Wales Hotel, another coach friendly Hotel for your group to consider. Situated on Lord Street, the Hotel has an incredible 154 en suite rooms, and is ideal for a quiet stay by the sea (TEL 0871 222 0039) The group then went onto the superb annual Southport Flower Show, held at Victoria Park. The Show offers an enjoyable and excellent day out, with superb colourful displays, Show Garden Results, Competitions, as well as the opportunity to see Chef Demo’s, Book Signings, meet celebrity guests, and purchase a massive range of plants, flowers, and locally grown fruit and vegetables. The show usually runs over several days, for more information visit www.southportflowershow.co.uk

I joined up with the group for the final day of the trip, leaving the Ramada Plaza early on Monday morning and boarding the waiting coach for a trip around Southport, with transport provided by Belle Vue Coaches, and Julia Fahey from Southport Tourism on Board. Our coach drive around Southport gave a real insight as to what the resort has to offer, including learning the history of the town which was founded back in 1792. Southport is booming in the current climate, with new developments opening, and many shopping opportunities. The town has two main coach drop off points, Neville Street, and one in the Promenade, making it easy for your coach group to be dropped off in two of the main areas. A meet and greet service can also be offered at Neville Street three days a week.

Southport has plenty to keep your group entertained, with Splashworld Water Park (TEL 01704 537160) and the Southport Pleasureland giving the traditional attractions you would expect from a British Seaside Resort. Upon completion of our trip on the coach, we headed off to our first visit of the day to look around The Atkinson, a cultural centre offering theatre, dance, ballet and cinema. The Atkinson’s main Theatre offers a wide range of performances throughout the year with seating for 440 people, and full disabled access. The building also has an excellent new art gallery opening in September this year, as well as hosting the towns Library, Tourist information centre, and on level 3 of the Grade II listed building, a museum which will be open to the public in June 2014. For more information on The Atkinson and what they can offer you group (TEL: 01704 533 333)

Southport Pier is well worth a visit. The 2nd longest pier runs at ¾ mile long, and for those not keen to take the walk, a tram service runs along the pier all year, and a road train throughout the main season.

Our group then headed onto Frankie & Benny’s for lunch. The New York Italian Restaurant and Bar offers a wide menu with all tastes catered for, ranging from wraps and pizza’s, to the more traditional fish and chip lunch. Your group can take in a full three course lunch, or simply opt for the Lunch menu and a lighter snack. The Restaurant is bright, with some great music playing, and your group can be sure of a warm welcome from the team. Coach parking is provided close to the Restaurant entrance. Further details (TEL: 01704 547152)

The group then headed back onto the coach, visiting the wonderful and tranquil Churtown Botanical Gardens, situated just outside of Southport. Churtown is pretty village, with some wonderful old shops, and traditional pubs, and the Botanic Gardens are set in stunning grounds with colourful flower beds, an aviary housing over 200 birds, a Museum and Café, Crazy Golf, and, if visiting during the summer months, be sure to visit the Gardens on a Sunday when you can relax with a picnic and listen to the Brass Bands playing in the grounds. Entry to the Garden’s is free, for further details (TEL: 01704 214164)

Our final visit of the day was to visit the Courtyard at Tarleton, originally Webster’s of Tarleton. The Courtyard hosts Whittles Farm Restaurant and coffee shop which serves an excellent selection of homemade food, whilst the retail side of the Yard is looked after by two gentlemen who also run the nearby Ena Mill. The shopping side of the Courtyard is currently being refurbished, and will be open to the public late September. Further information on the Courtyard can be obtained by calling TEL: 01772 812249

Renishaw Recollections

As part of Renishaw Hall & Garden’s 2014 season, which opens on March 29th, Christine Beevers, Renishaw Hall’s archivist, is asking people with personal and family links to the hall and estate to come forward and get in touch. Orwell River Cruises.... Explore the River

Orwell River Cruises Limited was specifically formed in 2001 to bring back the pleasure of river cruising to the River Orwell after an absence of such a facility for several decades. A Suffolk businessman, with strong links with the maritime scene, is the driving force behind the family owned Orwell River Cruises. It had long been an ambition to provide a traditional professionally run river cruise service locally so that more people could experience the wonders of the River Orwell and Stour estuary, including the very impressive Port of Felixstowe.

The River Orwell is one of the most scenic and historic rivers in the country, and has been officially voted by the Royal Yachting Association the second most beautiful river in England.Orwell Lady public cruises sail from Ipswich Wet Dock (Orwell Quay) to Pin Mill or Harwich Harbour from Easter weekend through to September. There is a programme of music evenings, sunset cruises, wine tasting and afternoon tea cruises throughout the season and the vessel is a popular venue for private charters.

Tickets for all public cruises and theme nights are available from the Tourist Information Centre in Ipswich by calling 01473 258070. For further information please visit the website www.orwellrivercruises.com, contact via info@orwellrivercruises.com or telephone 07734 875887.
